‘I need a shower, then a bottle of brandy, then a bath, then another shower, followed by a third shower,’ Scott said as he climbed into the car and put on his seatbelt.

The light had started to fade while they were in Laurence Dodds’s house, and it was almost dark. Other houses in the street had turned on their lights and Christmas trees were lit up in the living room windows. Only Laurence’s house was without any festive decorations.

‘I sort of felt sorry for him,’ Matilda said.

‘Why?’

‘If his mother had a stroke ten years ago and he’s been her full-time carer ever since, he’s not had much of a life, has he? Did you hear what he said before he told us about his volunteering work?’

‘No.’

‘Well, he sort of stopped himself. He mentioned that he was told to do something to get himself out of the house from time to time. I bet there was a time when all he was doing was caring for his mother. I bet he sank into a depression, and it was a doctor who told him to seek help, get support for his mum while he went out and had some kind of a life.’

‘Oh. I didn’t pick up on that.’

‘I did,’ Matilda said, looking up at the house.

‘Can I drive away now, please? I can still feel his breath on my neck.’

‘Go on.’

‘Are we crossing him off our list?’ Scott asked.

‘For now. Although I want the vicar interviewing.’ She looked back ahead once they were away from the house. ‘Someone has been driving around looking for a silver Vivaro they can clone the number plate from. The more we learn about this killer the more intelligent he’s appearing to be. He’s thought of everything. Now do you see why I’m so keen to lure him out into the open?’

‘I still don’t like it,’ Scott said. ‘If, like you say, he’s thought of everything from forensic evidence to cloning a registration plate, then that just makes him even more dangerous. If he does come after you following the news interview, you’re going to be in serious trouble.’

Matilda took a deep breath.

Suddenly, she felt very nervous.
